Synopsis
The story of the Veuve Clicquot family and the Champagne business that began in the late 18th century
The comet that Barbe Nicole mentions in her letters and that would later serve as the inspiration for the name of her champagne brand is the Great Comet of 1811, officially named C/1811 F1.
That year, it was visible to the naked eye for about 260 days
At the end of the film, it was announced that Barbe Nicole had died at the age of 89.
But in reality, she died at the age of 88
The relatively dry costume drama “Veuve Clicquot” tells the true story of how, in the late 16th century, the titular Barbe Nicole Clicquot (rising star Haley Bennett – excellent) inherited the Clicquot vineyards in Champagne from her mad and brilliant husband Tom Sturridge.
Thomas Napper directs solidly and Erin Dignam’s screenplay (with flashbacks) is interesting, though perhaps REALLY interesting only to wine lovers
and with dogged determination (and the support of Sam Riley), he fought off largely chauvinistic peer pressure (including Ben Miles and Paul Rhys) AND oppressive Napoleonic laws to create a legacy that lives on today with Veuve Clicquot.
